Weekly Devotional: Beauty From Ashes.

Have you ever wondered why bad things happen, let alone to good people? Or perhaps you struggle with something that happened in your own life. I know I have felt this way before, especially about a medical diagnosis.

After small group I was speaking with my husband about a scripture we had read in John 9, where a man was born blind. A disciple asked “Whose sins caused this man to be born blind; his or his parents?” Christ answered ““Neither. It happened to him so that you could watch him experience God’s miracle. ” The man was healed and went to the village and proclaimed a man had healed him. He became a vessel not only for God’s miracle, but for his Word and Testimony.
So my husband and I were speaking on this scripture. And I mentioned I don’t like to think of God causing pain, or causing defects, purely so He can heal. That doesn’t seem like the loving God I know. Until I realized, through this conversation, that God did not cause this man to be born blind. Science and genetics have not changed, nor has blindness and other problems. This man was blind. Period. Not for any reason other than he was. And God used where he was and how he was to work His Glory.

So where do you feel you fall short? What do you want more control over? Have you tried giving it over to God? God can use you exactly as you are and exactly where you are in life, to work his miracles and bring his glory to the world. You need only to trust in Him.
He will create Beauty from Ashes.
Small groups can be a great way to grow in your faith with like-minded people. Scripture tells us “Wherever two or more are gathered in my name, there I will be also” (Matthew 18:20). There are great conversations happening each week at our small groups and there’s new people coming each week too, so it’s always a good time to join in the discussion. Here’s the small groups happening right now at River City.

Head on over to our “Get Involved” section for more information on these groups.
