Grow, Pray & Study Guide: A People of Promise, Week 2

Our hope at River City is that you grow daily in your walk with God! One way to do that is to spend time with God every day. This Grow, Pray and Study Guide (GPS) is just one easy way to connect with God on a daily basis.

Monday

Psalm 50:7-13

Kind of a rough way to end the scripture don’t you think? Gross! 50:12 is my favorite! Everything is God’s and God needs nothing from us. So what are we to do? We are called to be good stewards of the gifts God has given us. Everything is God’s so everything is a gift. That breath…gift. That job…gift. Your child…gift. Your paycheck…gift. I have to admit that this is a hard teaching for me because I work hard for my paycheck and I want some stuff to be mine all mine! Take a second and make a list of some of your prize “possessions.” Spend some time looking at those. How does looking at them as a gift rather than a possession make you feel and change you/them?

Tuesday

Matthew 6:19-21, Deuteronomy 30:11-20

Reread Matthew 6:21. Reread Deuteronomy 30:15-18. Jesus’ teachings around money center around “where your heart is.” It is not important how much money you have, it is important where your heart is. Bank accounts vary. The heart is the important thing. What is the condition of your heart around finances? Are you anxious because you don’t have a budget? Are you anxious because your next door neighbor just bought a boat and now you have to keep up? Both are conditions of the heart and we have choices that lead us to less anxiety. In my mind, prosperity isn’t more money. It is peace of mind and peace of heart.

Wednesday

Computer and/or Checkbook

Take out your checkbook or your computer and look through the past month. Based off your observations where does most of your money go? Based off where it goes, where is your heart? Are you happy with the answer? Spend some time talking to God about your findings?

Thursday

Luke 12:13-34

Many people are confused by this verse because they stop reading at verse 20. Jesus was not calling those who save “fools.” No. He was using this story to set up verses 21-34 that focus on worry. Many times what we are worrying about gives us a great window to where our heart truly lies. When it comes to money I think we worry in two ways:

  1. What am I going to do? I don’t have enough to make it.
  2. How am I going to keep up with other people?

Where is our heart? God does asks us in these verses to be “rich towards God.” That is an open-ended challenge! Pray about what that means in your life. Be rich towards God today.

Friday

Luke 18:18-30, Luke 19:1-10

Let’s be honest…in the eyes of a large majority of the world we are all rich. Which rich man are you? Be rich towards God today.
