Small Group Study: Life’s Healing Choices Week 3

_________ Happens
This week we want to talk about the good times and the bad times. So to get the ball rolling we want everyone to think of your proudest moment and your most embarrassing moment. There are a lot of things that we can take pride in. Sometimes it is our job, our kids, our accomplishments, etc. If we aren’t careful sometimes these things can grow out of control. In our story of Jacob and Joseph we see a father (Jacob) who took pride in his son (Joseph). This was an ok thing but his pride was a little too deep.

Small Group Study: Life’s Healing Choices Week 2

Letting Go and Coming Clean
Focus of the Group—to hear one another’s stories! Part of sharing who you are and sharing some of your life experience. The good, the bad and not so pretty. This is the beginning of taking the steps to Let Go and Come Clean!
Let the group know that today we are going to focus on stories and hopefully hearing one another’s stories. The Healing Choices we are focusing on are “Letting Go and Coming Clean.”

Small Group Study: Life’s Healing Choices Week 1

Goal of Session One: Help people to realize we all have a hurt, habit or hang up and that Jesus provides
the church and other areas to get help in our time of need. I hope that through the sermon and the
small group people could identify a “hang up” that they have (could be anger, depression, anxiety,
alcohol, etc) and begin to admit that and look for help in Christ, the church and other areas.

Small Group Study: Experiencing Generosity: The Widow’s Offering

Today we are discussing “what God desires from us” and how that impacts the world around us. In

order to begin this discussion I want you to think of a mentor, coach, teacher, parent, etc. that really

worked to get the best he or she could out of you.

Grow, Pray, & Study Guide: Experiencing Generosity: The Widow’s Offering

In worship we discussed keystone habits that effect other areas of our lives. These are the foundational disciplines that set the tone for our continued growth. In this week’s GPS Guide you will be invited to try different exercises that could be used as foundational disciplines to spiritual growth. These disciplines will be centered around activities that could be repeated daily or on a consistent basis.

October 15 Small Group Discussion:

Allow for time to gather and for people to talk and introduce themselves to one another
Always start your meeting with sharing praises and where you’ve seen God lately (glory sighitings)
Opening Discussion:
1. Today we are talking about gifts so we want to start off telling stories of gifts. Take a second to
think about possibly the best or worst gift that you have ever been given?
2. How about a helpful gift…one that you kept on using years down the road?
3. Read Psalms 24:1-2 together.

This week our GPS guide is a little bit different. We will be working our way through Matthew 5 and also some of the 12 steps of Alcoholics Anonymous. If you have never worked the steps in your life they can be life changing even if you have never had a drink in your life. A true self-examination is a powerful way to grow in your walk with Christ! Some of the steps will be combined into one day because 5 does not equal 12. Here is a link to the 12 Steps.

Three Simple Ways to Exercise Your Faith in 2017

Posted on Jan 10, 2017 in General

Well, we are a few days in to 2017! How are those New Year’s Resolutions going? I hope they are going well, but I also know that the next couple weeks are critical for them to make it past the January threshold. Whatever your goals are I hope that they possess two qualities:  consistency and simplicity. I think these qualities are essential for lasting results. Consistency leads to goals becoming our new adopted lifestyle and simplicity helps us to stay focused. When it comes to your New Years Resolutions remember your new year’s KISS: Keep it Simple Stupid is the best advice I ever received!

Learning to Lament

Posted on Jul 18, 2016 in General

In times of trouble it is important to take time to Lament and to process as we also decide how we should respond. Listed below is a post I made about the need for Lament followed by The Psalms of Lament. My challenge to us in these days is to work through these Psalms as a guide. Christians have used these for centuries as guides in hard times of how to bring our true feelings towards God.

Making Lent Matter

Posted on Feb 18, 2016 in General

My first 34 years  of life have been filled with fads. It ain’t no lie that NSYNC (besides Justin Timberlake) has gone bye, bye, bye, but so have other things, such as Oregon Trail, The Real World, Pumps, and Starter Jackets have all been Trumped (is that a fad?). Even things my kids have enjoyed such as High School Musical and Justin Bieber have either gone out or are on their way out. Hopefully skinny jeans will follow suit.

3 Worship Songs for Your Roughest Day

Posted on Feb 16, 2016 in General

As a worship leader, it’s probably no surprise to you that music is my main way of connecting with God and dealing with life in general. Music allows me to feel emotions that sometimes my own words cannot express and so I find great comfort in some of the beautiful songs written by Christian artists. Here are 3 of my favorite songs to turn to when life gets a little too rough.

Laying a Faithful Foundation for Our Children

Posted on Feb 11, 2016 in General

So far 2016 has been filled with amazing football games. Whether it was the National Championship Game against Alabama and Clemson or an NFL Playoff Game, January was filled with close games and comebacks. It takes me way back to the days of Warren Moon and Frank Reich, when the Buffalo Bills found themselves down 31-3 going into the third quarter, only to come back and win the game. Everyone loves a comeba

7 Everyday Ways to Lay Your Life Down for A Friend

Posted on Jan 25, 2016 in General

Jesus likes to mix things up. He is like a church league, slow pitch softball pitcher and a major league closer all at the same time.

In John 15, Jesus give his final instructions to his disciples and the first one is a floater that Peter got really excited about knocking out the park. “Love one another.” Great. I can handle that.

The 4 Layers of Friendship

Posted on Jan 22, 2016 in General

We established that Shrek and Donkey are the best model of friendship in an

earlier blog. And just like Ogres, friendships are a lot like onions—they can smell and makes us cry, but most importantly, friendship is like onions because friendships also have many layers.  Those different layers, instead of forming an onion shape look much more like a funnel. Let’s call it, the Friendship Funnel; at each level of friendship we go a little deeper in our relationship with those people, but at each level there is less room. Therefore, not everyone who starts at the top of the layer of the funnel makes it all the way down and that is okay.

Like Clemson…Special Teams are Killing My Spiritual Life

Posted on Jan 12, 2016 in General

The day after the National Championship, the people wearing purple and orange are asking the “what if” questions when it comes to special teams play. Arguably, Clemson won the game on offense and defense minus a few big plays. It was special teams that lost the National Championship for Clemson.

5 Ways to a Better Life in 2016

January 1 has come and gone and many of us have set goals and casted visions for our 2016, but what if this year it was a little bit different. Yes, I do hope you have a “Happy New Year”, but more importantly I hope this year your life produces fulfillment and peace; and not just for yourself, but for others as well.
